How many bags of salt do I need for my pool?

It depends on your pool size and current salt level. Use the calculator above, or see the reference table for common pool sizes. As a rule of thumb, a 10,000-gallon pool starting from 0 needs about 7 bags (267 lbs) to reach 3,200 ppm.

What salt level should I target for my saltwater pool?

Most SWG manufacturers recommend around 3,200 ppm. Hayward AquaRite targets 3,200 ppm, Pentair IntelliChlor targets 3,400 ppm, and CircuPool targets 3,500 ppm. Check your SWG manual. The acceptable range for most systems is 2,700–3,400 ppm.

How long after adding salt can I swim?

Wait at least 30 minutes with the pump running after adding salt. For best results, wait until the next day after the pump has fully circulated the salt. Do not run your SWG for 24 hours after adding salt.

What type of salt should I use in a saltwater pool?

Use pool-grade sodium chloride (NaCl) with 99.8%+ purity. Recommended brands include Morton Pool Salt, Diamond Crystal Pool Salt, and Clorox Pool&Spa Salt. Never use rock salt, water softener salt with additives, or iodized table salt; impurities can damage your SWG cell.

Can you add too much salt to a pool?

Yes. Salt levels above 4,000–5,000 ppm can damage pool equipment, cause a noticeable salty taste, and void SWG warranties. The only way to lower salt is a partial drain and refill. This is why staged dosing (adding half at a time, running the pump, and retesting) is critical.
