How to Fix Cloudy Pool Water

What you'll need to clear cloudy water

Diagnose the Cause First

Cloudy water has three root causes. Test before treating:

Cause 1: Low FC or chemistry imbalance

Cloudiness after shock is not proof of successful disinfection. It may be dead or living algae, debris, poor filtration, or calcium-carbonate precipitation (especially after cal-hypo or soda ash). Test FC, CYA, valid pH, TA and calcium hardness; consider water temperature and the chemical just added. Low FC or persistent demand needs sanitation correction; haze with elevated calcium saturation needs a balance assessment rather than more cal-hypo. Inspect filtration as well.

Fix: Balance chemistry. FC first, then pH, then TA.

Cause 2: Filtration failure

A clogged or undersized filter cannot remove the fine particles that cause cloudiness. If chemistry is balanced but the pool stays cloudy, filtration is the problem.

Fix: Backwash or clean filter. Run 24 hours/day until clear.

Cause 3: Dead algae after treatment

Suspended dead algae is one possibility; living algae, calcium precipitate and debris can look similar. Recheck FC demand and balance, including the product just added.

Fix: Diagnose chemistry first; inspect filter pressure and flow. Clarifier is optional after checking compatibility.

The Fix Protocol

  1. Test FC, pH, TA, and calcium hardness. You need these numbers before doing anything else.
  2. Correct FC to your CYA-adjusted target. Use our chlorine calculator for the exact dose.
  3. Correct valid pH within 7.2 to 7.8. Use the pH calculator to get the right amount of acid or soda ash.
  4. Run the filter around the clock. Your filter is the only thing removing the particles causing cloudiness.
  5. Clean when indicated. Check filter pressure and flow against the clean baseline and the manufacturer’s cleaning trigger. Follow the sand, cartridge or D.E. procedure for your exact filter. Backwashing removes D.E.: restore the specified post-backwash amount and coating using the manual’s recharge sequence. Do not continue normal filtration with uncoated D.E. grids.
  6. Add pool clarifier per label directions. Clarifier clumps microscopic particles into larger ones your filter can catch.
  7. Test FC and pH at least twice daily until water clears and you can see the main drain from the pool deck.

Clarifier vs. Flocculant: Which One?

Clarifier helps compatible filters capture fine particles. Settling flocculants usually require the label’s settling period and vacuuming to waste; do not send settled floc through the filter unless explicitly permitted. Can I swim in a cloudy pool?

No. You must be able to see a submerged person and the pool bottom clearly. Before swimming, measure free chlorine and pH: pH 7.2–7.8, clear water with the bottom visible, no visible algae, and FC meeting both the measured-CYA minimum and the product label’s re-entry range. CDC minimums are 1 ppm without stabilizer and 2 ppm with stabilizer; stabilized pools may need more. Test FC and pH at least twice daily and more often with heavy use. A calculated dose is not swimming clearance.
